Whether you have been using essential oils for years or just starting to incorporate them into your daily routine, now is a great time to learn about how essential oils can be used to help during this challenging time we are all experiencing due to COVID-19.

At the Little Herb House, we have been exploring natural alternatives for decades and believe in their ability to help heal the body. The owner of the Little Herb House, Lisa Treadaway, incorporates essential oils into her daily life and is always switching and blending which oils she’s using depending on what health benefit she is looking for. For this post specifically, we will be sharing what we think are 3 great essential oils to be using during this time to help with a variety of issues ranging from stress relief to antiviral purposes.

Lavender Essential Oil

Arguably the most popular and widely used essential oil, lavender essential oil can have endless health benefits. For this time in particular, we recommend using lavender essential oil for stress relief. For many people, COVID-19 is leading to a rise in stress and stress related issues including low energy, headaches, upset stomach, inability to sleep, and more. Many of us now know that managing stress is essential in our overall well being. There are a couple of ways lavender essential oil can be used to help manage and decrease stress. I’m going to list my two personal favorite ways to use it. Diffusing lavender essential oils is the first way it can be used. Depending on the size of your diffuser and how strong you like the smell, add 3-10 drops of oil into your diffuser. I enjoy diffusing it about an hour before I plan to go to sleep, Inhaling the fragrance encourages relaxation, decreases feelings of stress and anxiety, and can assist in falling to sleep and staying asleep. Depending on your diffuser, you can leave it running while you sleep to help you not only fall asleep, but stay asleep. The second option for using lavender essential oil is to put it in your bath. If you are a person that enjoys taking baths, adding this to your bath can increase feelings of relaxation and help ease stress. I like to add a few scoops of epsom salt with my 10-12 drops of lavender essential oil, soak for 20 minutes, and I come out feeling like a new person!

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is not only one of the most popular fragrances among spas, but it also inhibits bacteria, viruses, fungi and fights infections. The calming fragrance of tea tree essential oil has demonstrated its ability to naturally support and boost immune system health and fight infections, as it diminishes the detrimental feeling of stress, which facilitates illness. Tea tree oil contains a number of compounds, including terpinen-4-ol, that have been shown to kill certain bacteria, viruses and fungi. Terpinen-4-ol also appears to increase the activity of your white blood cells, which help fight germs and other foreign invaders. One of the ways it can be used is in hand sanitizer (our Little Herb House Original Hand Sanitizer formulas contain tea tree oil!). Studies have shown that it kills several common bacteria and viruses responsible for causing illness, including E. coliS. pneumoniae and H. influenzae.

Orange Essential Oil

Used in aromatherapy, Orange Essential Oil’s pleasant scent has a cheerful and uplifting yet simultaneously relaxing, calming effect that helps reduce pulse rate. It can not only create a warm environment but can also stimulate the strength and resilience of the immune system and eliminate airborne bacteria. Being stuck in the home all day forced to be sedentary can decrease our energy and productivity levels. Being sedentary can also have several mental side effects, including depression. Finding a way to stay productive and energetic is essential in ensuring we all make it through this challenging time. Diffusing orange essential oil into  your workspace and home can enhance your mood and energy levels, and it smells delicious!
